Zodiac Birthstones

You likely know about monthly birthstones. A monthly traditional birthstone is simply a gemstone assigned to your particular birth month. But what about Zodiac sign birthstones?

Zodiac birthstones pair your astrological sign with precious or semi-precious gemstones that promote properties that align with your zodiac sign qualities. For example, if you’re an Aries, known for your bold approach to life, your zodiac birthstone would be a similarly bold stone that represents authenticity and courage; it could also be a stone that may offer healing or cleansing properties suited to your sign’s needs.

So, wondering ‘What is my zodiac birthstone’? Here’s what you need to know.

What You Will Learn

Birthstones by Zodiac vs. Birthstones by Month

zodiac stone

It’s worth noting that, if you already wear a particular gemstone often, because it’s your modern birthstone, you may already be wearing your zodiac stone. That’s because traditional birthstone dates (January 1–31, February 1–28/29, March 1–30, and so on) sometimes align with zodiac signs. That said, while there is a lot of overlap, it’s not a perfect fit.

  • Pisces ♓ February 19–March 20💎Amethyst
  • Aries ♈ March 21–April 19💎Bloodstone

  • Scorpio ♏ October 23–November 21💎Aquamarine
  • Sagittarius ♐ November 22–December 21💎Blue turquoise

As you can see, there are a few places where the gemstones overlap, like in January and February, but it’s not an ideal fit. Additionally, there are many instances wherein the zodiac stones are entirely different from those traditionally used to signify one’s birth month.

For example, if you identify as a Gemini, you may be wearing an emerald if you were born in late May or a pearl if you were born in early to mid-June. However, what you should really be wearing is an agate.

So why should you wear zodiac gemstones instead of one of the selections from a modern birthstone list or even one of the many alternative birthstone options? Here’s how doing so could benefit you — or at least help you embrace your love for all things astrology.

Aquarius Birthstone

Garnet is the Aquarius birthstone for those born between January 20 and February 18. If you were born in late January, this aligns with your traditional January birthstone.

According to Astrology.com, if you’re an Aquarius, you’re likely to be highly individualistic, innovative, quirky, and empathetic while also being selective about your personal relationships. According to the Centre of Excellence, garnet can be incredibly restorative to Aquarians, who tend to be empathetic to the point that it drains their energies. Additionally, garnets are known to help promote commitment, which can be helpful if an Aquarium is overly selective when trusting others in those personal relationship settings.

Pisces Birthstone

Similarly to the Aquarius birthstone, the Pisces birthstone overlaps with the February birthstone—if you were born in the latter half of February. The traditional February birthstone is amethyst, and so is the Pisces birthstone, with those born February 19 through March 20 are Pisces.

According to Astrology.com, Pisces are highly intuitive and deeply spiritual. While this can lead to keen insight and wisdom, it can also cause anxiety and emotional turbulence that comes from a robust inner life. As such, the Centre of Excellence states that amethyst can help calm some of that restlessness. Furthermore, amethyst is known to help improve brain function, such as focus and memory, and it can also help relieve anxiety.

Aries Birthstone

Aries are those with a birthday during March 21 and April 19. You won’t see the Aries birthstone anywhere on a list of modern monthly birthstones. One of the more unique zodiac gemstones, the Aries birthstone is a bloodstone.

What exactly is a bloodstone?

It’s a dark green mineral that sometimes contains red flecks, likened to blood, hence the name. Found in India, bloodstone was used widely in the Middle Ages, when it represented martyrdom. However, it’s not quite as popular now (via Britannica).

According to the Centre of Excellence, today, bloodstone is worn for its grounding and restorative properties which also help boost feelings of courage and determination. It can also help with intuition and perception. As such, this can help with some traditional Aries characteristics that, while admirable on some levels, can be detrimental to others. Aries are known to be driven, impulsive, and intense (via Astrology.com), and bloodstone can purportedly help these traits flourish without harming or hindering the wearer.

Taurus Birthstone

A Taurus is anyone born between April 20–May 20. They are stubborn, resilient, and always up for a good time. A Taurus’ zodiac birthstone is the blue sapphire. According to Astrological Gemstones, blue sapphire can help promote discipline and grounding within a Taurus, particularly if one wears a lighter blue sapphire.

Gemini Birthstone

You’re a Gemini if your birthday falls between May 21 to June 20. As Astrology.com describes, a Gemini is mutable, fickle, flighty, and restless. They can also be extremely eager to learn and very intelligent, as well as capable of viewing multiple perspectives without being tied down to a sense of single-mindedness.

Gemini’s birthstone is agate, a gorgeous, multi-colored, and intricately patterned stone in all varieties, from blue lace agate to moss agate to crazy lace agate. According to Astrological Gemstones, agate provides several benefits to the intelligent Gemini. It can help maintain focus and mental clarity and even help calm a bit of that fickle and flighty restlessness.

Cancer Birthstone

The fourth astrological sign, those born under the sign of Cancer, June 21–July 22, according to Astrology.com, can be moody, intuitive, compassionate, and competitive. This sign’s birthstone is the emerald, which differs from the normal June birthstones, like a pearl.

According to the Centre of Excellence, emeralds can be valuable to those born under the Cancer sign. They can help promote emotional stability, which can help ease up a little of that moodiness, while also increasing compassion and intuition. Additionally, emeralds can help boost the motherly, maternal properties that Cancers often exhibit.

Leo Birthstone

The fifth astrological sign, the Leo zodiac sign (born between July 23 and August 22), is linked to onyx.

According to Crystal Digest, black onyx can promote mental clarity and stability, making it an excellent healing stone for those with mental health issues. Onyx has properties associated with self-control, focus, mental stimulation, increased creativity, grounding and positivity.

This is all excellent news for Leos, who, like their associated lion, are sometimes larger than life, dramatic, stubborn, and audacious (via Astrology.com). Black onyx can help ground overzealous Leos and provide focus and self-control when they’re sorely needed.

Virgo Birthstone

Virgos are anyone born during August 23 to September 22. However, you might not be familiar with the Virgo birthstone: Carnelian. According to the Centre of Excellence, a red-brown semi-precious stone, carnelian, can help Virgos battle self-criticism and doubts of self-worth and inspire a child-like joy. This can be incredibly helpful for this sign, as Virgos can be, as Astrology.com details, perfectionists with a keen eye for detail — making it incredibly easy for Virgos to be a little hard on themselves.

Libra Birthstone

The Libra birthstone is peridot and ideal for those born September 23–October 22. This differs from more typical October birthstones, which often include opal.

According to Crystal Digest, peridot’s vibrant lime green hue brings success and happiness. It can help combat impurities, inflammation, restlessness, and stress. It’s more specifically known to help alleviate guilt and trauma while increasing calm, clarity, and joy.

This clarity can benefit Libras, as Libras are — as their symbol, the scales, suggest — constantly weighing the pros and cons and a bit indecisive (via Astrology.com).

Scorpio Birthstone

Scorpios (born during October 23 and November 21) claim aquamarine as their birthstone of choice. Scorpios benefit from aquamarine’s clarifying, stress-relieving properties, which can give them the courage to communicate their feelings and needs with others (via Centre of Excellence). This is all good news to those Scorpios who fully embody the sign’s most popular traits, which include, according to Astrology.com, a large degree of deep and intense emotions.

Sagittarius Birthstone

While typical November birthstones might include topaz, topaz isn’t the top choice for those seeking their birthstone zodiac sign and those born under the sign of Sagittarius, November 22–December 21. Instead, Sagittarius’s zodiac stone is blue turquoise.

Sagittariuses are known as excessive, brazen, argumentative, and sometimes prone to vices—but despite this, they’re often incredibly lucky (via Astrology.com). According to the Centre of Excellence, blue turquoise can provide calm to the overly negative or anxious Sagittarius and protection when the Sagittarius travels (Sagittariuses are known to be avid travelers).

The Centre of Excellence also points out that the very similar blue topaz is likewise a favorite Sagittarius birthstone, particularly for those Sagittarius’s born in December, rather than the end of November. For those individuals, the blue topaz can provide luck, happiness, and clarity of mind.

Capricorn Birthstone

Last but certainly not least, Capricorns are those born December 22–January 19, and while the traditional December birthstones might include zircon, the Capricorn birthstone is the ruby.

According to Astrology.com, Capricorns are patient, stoic, perseverant, and resilient. However, all that patience and perseverance can still wear one down emotionally, and that’s where ruby comes in. Ruby is a gemstone that can provide stress relief, energy, and joy in the face of issues like burnout (via Crystal Digest).

A Few Notes on Zodiac Birthstones

While it can be entertaining to examine the twelve signs and how your personality may align with descriptions of how each sign behaves and feels, be cautious of basing certain decisions on your astrology sign — even during your decision to wear a gemstone that aligns with your zodiac sign.

Quote 2

While some gemstones may be known for their protective properties, it’s not wise to engage in particularly risky business just because you’re wearing that gemstone. Likewise, suppose you suffer from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or burnout. In that case, a gemstone is not often a suitable replacement for more formal medical treatment.

Zodiac Birthstone FAQs

How are Astral Stones Different from Zodiac Stones?

There’s really no difference between astral stones and zodiac stones. You can use the terms interchangeably. The term “astral” is derived from “astrology.”

Can a Single Zodiac Sign Benefit from Multiple Gemstones?

Yes! While the listed above are some of the primary birthstones assigned to various zodiac signs, you’ll find that many practitioners may recommend multiple gemstones for a single individual and their zodiac sign. There’s not just one gemstone that could benefit your unique personality; likewise, a single gemstone might offer benefits to multiple zodiac signs.

For example, rose quartz is recommended for those born under the signs of Libra or Taurus, and it can increase feelings of love, improve mental health, and increase fertility (via Angara). Lapis lazuli, meanwhile, is recommended for Virgos (via the National Association of Jewellers), just as pink tourmaline is applicable for Virgos and Libras (via Haver Hill).
