Rarest Crystal in the World

What Is the Rarest Crystal?

Rare crystals are unique from, but no less prized than, the world’s most valuable gemstones, such as diamonds and sapphires. And they too have been used in jewelry for their supposed metaphysical properties for ages. Differentiated by their patterned, organized atomic structure, crystals can range from the common pieces you can purchase at your local gemstone shop to rarer varieties found in fine jewelry.

As such, you’re probably very familiar with certain types of crystals, like amethyst and jade, but do you know the rarer crystal varieties?

What You Will Learn

What Is the Rarest Crystal on Earth?

So, what is the most rarest crystal in the world? It’s largely believed that this title goes to Taaffeite.

With a price tag of more than $2,000 per carat, Taaffeite was discovered purely by chance in the 1940s. An Irish gemologist, Count Edward Charles Richard Taaffe (for whom the crystal is named), was sorting through some gemstones and came across one that he suspected was a little different from the rest. With the help of the Laboratory of the London Chamber of Commerce, Taaffe’s suspicions were confirmed, and Taaffeite was recorded as a new species.

Today, it’s believed that fewer than 50 known samples of authentic Taaffeite exist, mostly held in private collections, so good luck finding one!

Known sources of Taaffeite include Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Myanmar. It’s similar in appearance to spinel and has been seen in several different colors, including purple, pink, red, brown, blue, gray, green, and a transparent shade. The color depends upon the trace minerals found within; for example, chromium and iron result in a purple effect, and purple Taaffeite is the most valuable.

Why Is Taaffeite So Rare?

Several factors contribute to Taaffeite’s rarity, including the unique geological conditions that must exist for it to form — beryllium, magnesium, and aluminum must all be present in a sedimentary carbonate rock — as well as the fact that it’s simply not actively mined.

Taaffeite has become popular in engagement rings for those who can afford it, but you won’t find these beauties at your neighborhood jewelry store. Instead, you’ll need to look for options priced to request from high jewelry designers like Kat Florence.

While it’s not commonly used for its metaphysical properties due to cost and rarity, practitioners do say the crystal may boost intuition, creativity, and intellect.

Okay, so you’re probably not going to buy Taaffeite any time soon. But what other crystals are both rare and (at least in most cases) actually available for purchase? Below are a number of examples of crystals that can be faceted into gemstones, too.

Precious Gemstones

Red Beryl

Gem-quality red beryl offers a deep red hue. It’s found exclusively in the American Southwest, and high-quality stones can cost upwards of $10,000 per carat. Also sometimes called “the red emerald” or Bixbite — for mineralogist Maynard Bixby, who discovered it in 1904 — red beryl is not currently commercially produced for use in jewelry.

Alexandrite

Discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s and named for Russia’s Alexander II, Alexandrite is quite remarkable due to its dual nature. The crystal has a green hue in natural light but a red hue under incandescent light. Today, it’s mined primarily in Brazil and Sri Lanka.

In late 2024, an Alexandrite ring set a record as the most expensive piece ever to be sold at auction when Sotheby’s sold a 16.53-carat oval Alexandrite ring for $1.9 million.

Tanzanite

This rare gem boasts a deep blue or purple hue. Discovered in the 1960s in Tanzania near the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro (still the only place where you can find the crystal), it was named the December birthstone in 2002, despite its rarity. In early 2024, the Guinness World Record was set for the world’s largest-cut tanzanite, with a carving dubbed L’Heure Bleu by artist Naomi Sarna weighing 703 carats. As of 2017, it’s estimated it was worth half a million dollars.

Imperial Jade

A form of jadeite, imperial jade is not your average crystal. With a high price tag, this is the rarest form of jadeite, offering an emerald green hue and smooth texture. While highly translucent imperial jade is highly prized, it’s also even rarer. Most imperial jade is marked by a lack of clarity, with an almost cloudy appearance due to internal inclusions.

Painite

Just how rare is painite? Only a handful of the crystals exist, and for a time, only one was known, which was housed at a museum in Great Britain. It’s estimated that there are a few hundred painite pieces in the world. Discovered in Myanmar, it was initially mistaken for ruby due to its dark red, almost fiery appearance.

Paraiba Tourmaline

Discovered in the 1980s, Paraiba Tourmaline takes its name from the place where it was discovered: Paraiba, Brazil. The crystal features a bright blue color, high clarity, and an incandescent light that collectors love. One of the largest and most valuable pieces of Paraiba Tourmaline is known as The Blue Lagoon, a 94-carat gemstone set in a custom fine jewelry necklace. It’s estimated to be worth just under $3 million.

Padparadscha Sapphire

With its pink and orange hues, the Padparadscha Sapphire is far from your typical blue sapphire. The rarest and most expensive of the bunch, it’s named after the Sanskrit word for “lotus” and is sourced from Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Tanzania. If you follow the British royals, this crystal may look familiar as it appears in Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring.

What about Precious Gemstones Like Diamonds and Opals?

When it comes to the most well-known gemstones and even those that are marketed as incredibly rare … they aren’t really that rare. Take diamonds, for example. It’s a complete misconception that diamonds are an extremely rare gemstone. In fact, diamonds are one of the most common gemstones, and there are many gemstones rarer than diamonds.

That said, just because a gemstone is the rarest in the world, that doesn’t make it the most expensive. The rarest, Taaffeite, demands around $2,000 per carat. However, that’s a far cry from the price tag on the most expensive gemstone in the world: the blue diamond. Naturally occurring, high-quality blue diamonds can cost nearly $4 million per carat.

The rarest opals are also the most valuable: black opals. A black opal features bright flashes of color (known as play-of-color) on a dark, black background. This extremely rare mineral is found primarily in the Lightning Ridge of Australia. In contrast to black opal, white opal is the most common opal color.

What Is the Rarest Crystal on Earth & Rarest Gemstone FAQs

What Is a Crystal a Million Times Rarer Than a Diamond?

Taaffeite is estimated to be about a million times rarer than a diamond. In fact, it’s the rarest crystal of all, with fewer than 50 estimated samples believed to exist. This rarity is due to a few factors, including the unique geological circumstances that must align for its creation, and the fact that no one is actively mining for Taaffeite at this time.

What Does “Gem-Quality Specimens” Mean?

When you hear gem cutters refer to a crystal as a gem-quality specimen, it means that the crystal is of high enough quality for use in jewelry, with a high level of color and clarity.

What Is the Most Valuable Opal?

When comparing general types of opals, black opals are the most valuable. However, out of all the valuable black opals in the world, there’s one that’s the most valuable of all: the Flame Queen Opal. The 261-carat piece features red, green, and blue hues, contrasting nicely with its dark body tone. A rare gemstone discovered in Australia in the early 1900s, the opal is valued at more than $3 million and is currently privately owned.

What Does “Crystal Structure” Refer to?

Crystal structure refers to the structured arrangement of atoms and molecules within a crystal, gemstone, or mineral.

What Is the Most Expensive Gemstone in the World?

The most expensive gemstone in the world is a natural blue diamond. With its bright blue color, this rare stone can fetch nearly $4 million per carat.
