What You Will Learn

What is a square shape diamond called?

Let’s talk about some diamond cuts that have a square shape.

First, there are princess cut diamonds. This is the diamond shape that is a true square with four sharp corners.

Then there are radiant cut diamonds. This shape looks like a princess cut but with its corners cropped. Both the princess and radiant are a type of square brilliant cut diamond. Similar to round brilliant cuts, they’re made with lots of tiny facets to reflect the light and shimmer.

Next, there’s the cushion cut – this diamond is squarish but its corners and edges are much more rounded.

Finally, there are Asscher and emerald cut diamonds – these square shaped diamonds are different because they’re step cuts. Instead of many light-reflecting facets, they’re made with long, straight cuts that resemble steps. Step cut diamonds don’t sparkle brilliantly like the other cuts, instead, they have a flashy, fiery kind of shine that some people prefer in an engagement ring.

Who should wear a square cut engagement ring?

Square cut diamond rings can be a great choice for anyone who loves the geometric look of a square or wants a diamond ring with a unique shape. Square diamonds don’t have the visual effect of making your hands or fingers appear more slender. For that effect, look to more elongated diamond shapes like ovals or rectangles.

Which celebrities have square cut diamonds for engagement rings?

  • Vanessa Hudgens wears a gorgeous emerald cut diamond on a gold band
  • Jennifer Lopez received a massive green cushion cut diamond ring from Ben Affleck
  • Gwyneth Paltrow wore an 8 carat weight Asscher cut before her “conscious uncoupling” from Chris Martin
  • Hilary Duff wears a stunning radiant cut engagement ring
  • Sherri Shepherd wears a princess cut diamond engagement ring set in platinum

Are square diamonds cheaper than round?

Round brilliant cut diamonds tend to top out at the most expensive. This is because of the large amount of rough diamond that must be cut away to make one. They’re also the most popular which drives their price up too. Radiant diamonds on the other hand are frequently touted as the least popular cut, so look for bargains there.

Another way to save money? Buy a diamond that looks larger than it is. Typically, the more elongated cut diamonds appear larger than round diamonds of the same carat weight.

And remember, looking for less sought-after diamond cuts can be a great way to find savings when buying your diamond.
