How to Clean a Moissanite Engagement Ring?

December 11th, 2022

Eco-friendly stones like moissanite have recently increased in popularity among engagement ring buyers. Moissanite comes in various colors, sizes, and shapes and is comparable in brilliance and durability to the more traditional diamond. Most importantly, moissanite is more affordable than other stones, offering a cost-effective ring option.

Cleaning a moissanite ring to maintain its shine doesn’t require a trip to the jeweler. Learn how to clean moissanite jewelry at home and protect your piece with insurance from BriteCoTM.

What is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a clear mineral often used in engagement rings in place of more expensive diamonds. Moissanite is made of crystalline silicon carbide and is naturally occurring and made in a laboratory. Natural moissanite deposits are rare, so most engagement rings have lab-created moissanite stones in their settings

Moissanite stones offer a more affordable gemstone for engagement and wedding rings than diamonds. For example, you can buy 11 mm moissanite engagement rings for about $3,000, whereas the same budget would only afford you a 6 mm high-quality diamond.

Moissanite rates a 9.25 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, making them durable and suitable for everyday wear. They exhibit a fiery brilliance that differs from diamonds but can give off a yellow or gray hue in certain lights.

How to Clean a Moissanite Engagement Ring?

If you own a moissanite engagement ring, you can restore its shine by taking it to a jeweler or professional jewelry cleaner. However, the best way to clean a moissanite engagement ring is at home. Since moissanite is durable, you can easily remove dirt, oil, or other substances with the following steps:

  • Step 1. Add a few drops of gentle liquid dish soap to a glass or ceramic bowl. Choose a mild soap that doesn’t contain harsh chemicals, lotions, or antibacterial additives.
  • Step 2. Add a few drops of ammonia to the dish soap at the bottom of the cup. Ammonia is typically sold as a household cleaning product, labeled as ammonia hydroxide.
You can go as high as ¼ cup ammonia to 1 cup water; however, you will want to work in a well-ventilated area away from pets or children. Never mix ammonia with bleach, as it can produce toxic fumes.
Vinegar offers a natural replacement for ammonia and is safe for moissanite and precious metals.
  • Step 3. Pour lukewarm water into the cup with dish soap and ammonia (or vinegar). Agitate the liquid to create a bubbly mixture, and place your moissanite ring at the bottom.
  • Step 4. Allow your moissanite engagement ring to soak in the warm water for about 20 to 30 minutes. This process allows the soap and ammonia to break up oil residue or debris so you can easily remove them in the next step.
  • Step 5. Use a clean, soft toothbrush to gently scrub the ring to remove dirt and grime. Moissanite is a hard gemstone, so you won’t damage it with a soft-bristled brush.
Although you will want to scrub all areas of the ring to get rid of buildup, don’t scrub too vigorously. Gold is a malleable metal and could be scratched if rubbed too hard. Additionally, you could bend a prong in the settings if you use the wrong cleaning utensil.
  • Step 6. After scrubbing your ring, rinse the moissanite and ring setting in clean water. Remove all traces of dish soap and ammonia, so no residue remains. This should restore the rainbow brilliance unique to moissanite stones.
  • Step 7. You can allow your moissanite ring to air dry after cleaning by setting it on a microfiber or other soft cloth. If you prefer, use a microfiber towel or other appropriately lint free cloth to dry your ring so you can wear and enjoy it right away.
