Do You Wear Your Engagement Ring on Your Wedding Day?

You adore your engagement ring. You’ve loved and prized it since the day your honey popped the question. However, your wedding day is coming up, and you’re thinking about how the ring exchange is will go down during the wedding ceremony.

You envision your partner sliding the beautiful wedding band onto your left hand, and then there’s a snag in the plan. Tradition dictates that wedding bands be worn closest to your hand, with engagement rings on the exterior. So, do you fumble at the altar, quickly removing your engagement ring so your fiancé can place the wedding ring? That sounds less than romantic, probably prompting you to wonder: Do you wear your engagement ring on your wedding day?

What You Will Learn

Do You Wear Your Engagement Ring to Your Wedding? What Wedding Tradition Dictates

So, do you wear an engagement ring on your wedding day?

Tradition says yes. However, tradition dictates that you not wear your engagement ring where and how you usually might. Instead, the traditional option is to wear the engagement ring on your right hand ring finger rather than on your left hand fourth finger, which is what you’ve probably been doing all these months leading up to the wedding.

Going the traditional route allows your spouse-to-be to easily place the wedding ring on your left hand during the ring exchange ceremony, with no fumbling or extra steps required. Then, you can move and stack your engagement ring onto the same finger as your wedding ring whenever you get a spare moment between the ceremony and the wedding reception.

However, it’s worth noting that you don’t have to wear both the engagement ring and wedding band on the same finger if you don’t want to! There are plenty of unique ways that couples are opting to wear their wedding and engagement rings, in whatever ways make the most sense for their lifestyles and style preferences.

Engagement Ring Wedding Day Plans: Non-Traditional Options

Along those lines, if you want to shake things up and choose a different option for wearing your engagement ring on your wedding day, beyond the traditional right ring finger, there are plenty of other choices!

1. Have Your Rings Soldered Together Ahead of Time

One option is to have the rings soldered together ahead of time. This option puts the engagement ring stacked with the wedding ring and fused together semi-permanently (while the rings can be separated, it’s a complex process only a jeweler can undertake) into one piece of jewelry.

The downside to this option is that, while the rings are with the jeweler who is soldering them together, the process could be time-consuming and leave you without any rings for some time. The other downside is that you will not have to wear your wedding ring before the ceremony (unless you’re okay with wearing your wedding ring before the big day). Suppose you want to show off that sparkly diamond ring during the weeks and days leading up to your wedding. In that case, you might not prefer this option.

However, the upside is that when your spouse goes to place the ring on your finger, there’s no fumbling or fiddling. They just slide the soldered two rings onto your finger at once for a seamless, perfect look. Additionally, suppose you had already planned to have the two rings soldered together after the wedding. In that case, this makes for one less post-wedding task on your plate.

2. Entrust Your Engagement Ring to Your Ring Bearer or Another Wedding Party Member

With this option, you simply pass off your engagement ring to your ring bearer or another wedding party member right before the ceremony. Then, after the exchange of the wedding rings and you are now wearing your wedding band, that wedding party member supplies your engagement ring so your sweetheart can add it to your finger as well. This option incorporates the engagement ring into the wedding ceremony with ease.

However, you will have to trust your engagement ring with someone else for a brief time. If your ring bearer is a small child or pet, we recommend entrusting in a more responsible wedding guest.

3.  Just Wear Your Engagement Ring Like Normal

Of course, you can just wear your engagement ring on your left hand like usual. While the placement during the wedding ceremony won’t be perfect, you can always make a quick post ceremony readjustment and switch the rings around. This option is the most convenient and easiest, even though it might not give you the look you want.

The Most Important Engagement Ring Question: Is Yours Protected?

Beyond the question of when and how to wear your engagement ring, the most important question is likely whether your engagement ring is insured.

Engagement ring insurance protects you if your engagement ring is lost, stolen, or damaged before, during, or after the wedding (because nothing ruins wedding planning fun like a lost engagement ring).

Further specialized jewelry insurance can protect your wedding bands as well. Even if you think your wedding ring fits nicely, you don’t want to find out it actually doesn’t, when you’re at your reception or on your honeymoon, and you suddenly realize your ring’s not there.
