What is Wedding Insurance?

What Is Wedding Insurance, and Do You Need It?

A wedding is a huge investment. You’re likely spending tens of thousands of dollars on what you expect will be one of the best days of your life. However, as you plan a budget for your wedding, don’t forget one particular necessary cost that can help protect your overall investment: wedding insurance.

Have you never heard of this form of insurance? You probably haven’t, unless you work in the wedding industry or have been married before.

What You Will Learn

Types of Wedding Event Insurance

There are two primary types of wedding event insurance: wedding liability insurance and wedding cancellation coverage.

What Does Liability Insurance for Wedding Events Cover?

Liability coverage is special event insurance that protects you and your wedding venue from being held liable if something goes wrong during the event. Some event liability insurance will apply over a few days, so it covers all aspects of your wedding, from setup to the rehearsal dinner to the ceremony and reception and then cleanup.

BriteCo’s event liability coverage provides the following:

  • General liability coverage, which covers general injuries or damages that occur within the event
  • Property damage coverage to protect against lawsuits arising from venue damage
  • Host liquor liability coverage to protect against lawsuits related to damage or harm resulting from drinking
  • Pet liability coverage, to protect against damage or harm caused by a pet

You can also add additional wedding insurance coverage for medical payments that may result from the wedding activities and coverage that protects both your vendors and venues in the event of a claim.

Sometimes, your wedding venue will request that you purchase wedding insurance, specifically a policy that ensures they can avoid any financial liability in the event of a lawsuit. Host liquor liability insurance is a particularly popular venue requirement for this reason.

What Does Wedding Cancellation Insurance Cover?

Cancellation or postponement insurance policies provide coverage that helps recoup some of your wedding costs if you don’t get what you paid for.

So, for example, if you have event cancellation coverage and a significant weather event shuts down your city, most wedding insurance policies would help you recoup your costs. Likewise, if you hire a vendor and they go out of business, the wedding insurance covers your lost deposits.

BriteCo’s event cancellation insurance also includes coverage for professional counseling services that may be necessary after an unexpected change of plans and coverage for wedding gifts and jewelry (excluding engagement rings and watches). BriteCo also offers special add-on wedding event cancellation insurance that allows you to recoup up to 75% of your non-refundable wedding expenses in the event of a “change of heart,” including a qualifying breakup.

What Do Wedding Insurance Providers Not Cover?

Please note that most wedding insurance companies have specific coverage limits even if you buy wedding insurance.

For example, one insurance company might only offer insurance to cover your reception, while others might cover your entire wedding. One insurance agent might decline coverage for activities deemed risky, such as if you incorporate motorized vehicles into your reception or ceremony in some way.

Cancellation coverage limits often dictate that you will not receive coverage if your wedding is canceled due to certain illnesses, minor weather, or cold feet (unless you have BriteCo’s extra “change of heart” coverage).

Wedding Insurance Costs

So how much does wedding insurance cost? You’ll be glad to know this is one of the more affordable wedding costs. BriteCo’s comprehensive liability coverage to insure weddings starts at just $114. Meanwhile, BriteCo’s wedding insurance for cancellation starts at just $80.

Events Insurance FAQs

What Is Covered by Wedding Insurance?

Wedding insurance coverage will differ from policy to policy, from wedding cancellation and postponement coverage to wedding liability coverage. The former helps you recoup some of your investment if your wedding is canceled or postponed,or if a vendor cancels on you. The latter keeps you covered in the event of a lawsuit related to harm or damage that occurs during your wedding.

Do You Need Wedding Insurance?

It depends on your venue. Some will require that you purchase wedding insurance. However, even if your venue does not require it, you may still want to consider it for the peace of mind it will give you during your big day.

How Soon Do I Need Wedding Insurance?

While you can purchase wedding insurance up until your wedding day, it is wise to purchase it as soon as you book your venue. Not only may your venue require it, but it also ensures protection if something pops up during the planning process, which a policy can help cover.
