Good Makeup Artist for a Wedding

A good wedding makeup artist is someone whose bridal beauty portfolio matches your style, whose reviews as a professional makeup artist show reliability, whose pricing and contract are clear, and whose makeup trial proves they can make your look photograph well and last all day.

Let’s check in with event planner Lauren Kytka, owner of Olive & Eden Weddings in Austin, Texas, about how to find a good makeup artist for a wedding. You’ll learn how to gauge compatibility and ultimately vet your choices, so you make the best decision for your big day (and if you’re in the throes of all things wedding planning, go ahead and check out our guide to how to plan a wedding, too!).

Do I Need a Makeup Artist for My Wedding?

You should hire a pro to do your wedding day makeup if you want long-wear, photo-ready makeup and less wedding-morning stress — but you might choose to go the DIY route if you already do your own makeup very well and you’re willing to practice your wedding makeup looks ahead of time.

Pro makeup for your wedding can be very helpful, but it’s not a necessity, especially if you’ve already wondered about wedding costs and decided you need to rein in your budget a bit. However, if you do have the budget for it, and you’re thinking about what to do on the day of your wedding and getting overwhelmed by all the to-dos, hiring a bridal makeup artist can lessen the stress.

“It’s a 12-, 14-hour day,” Kytka says. ”Your standard makeup is not going to last that long unless you continue to reapply. And if you keep leaving the reception to reapply, you miss out on important relationships and time spent with people.”

How Much Do Wedding Makeup Artists Cost?

The cost of wedding makeup services varies significantly based on factors such as location, the makeup artists’ experience level, whether they’re just offering bridal services vs. services for the entire wedding party, whether or not they’re including a makeup trial in your package, whether or not they provide touch-ups throughout the day, travel fees, and the type of makeup offered (such as airbrush vs. traditional).

As you attempt to find a makeup artist for your wedding, keep these pricing elements in mind. A big part of wedding planning is understanding how much a wedding costs and how so many fluctuating factors such as these can impact your final budget.

When Should You Book a Wedding Makeup Artist?

Book a wedding makeup artist early in the planning process, as soon as you have your wedding date and venue confirmed. Another big part of learning how to plan a wedding is understanding timing and booking urgency, and experienced, professional makeup artists can book up quickly. You want to get on their schedule quickly.

When Should You Book a Wedding Makeup Artist

“Typically you want to book your makeup artist between six and nine months before your wedding,” Kytka says. “A good planner can get you an artist, because we’ve built those relationships over time.”

After you’ve confirmed the makeup artist will be available for your wedding date, schedule your makeup trial for when you’re further along in the process and have a greater idea of what your dress will look like and what accessories you’ll be wearing. That way, your makeup for wedding day is determined in advance, and you’re not bandying about wedding makeup ideas on the day of. You don’t want the decision-making to be part of the itinerary, as you decide on what to do on the day of your wedding.

What Should You Look for in a Wedding Makeup Artist’s Portfolio and Reviews?

As you compare and contrast makeup artists, consider the following:

  1. Whether or not the makeup artist has experience working with clients with multiple skin tones and of various ages
  2. How consistent their work appears across their entire portfolio
  3. How their work appears not just in close-up makeup shots, but also in their clients’ real wedding photos
  4. Whether or not their overall style matches your preferred look
  5. What reviews say about their punctuality, professionalism, and looks’ lasting power

“Looking at their portfolio to make sure that it matches up with your vision, and looking  at their Instagram and their Google reviews, are very, very important,” Kytka says.

If you’re figuring out how to plan a wedding on your own, it’s especially important to vet all your vendors carefully, as hiring the wrong ones could spell disaster for your big day (so make sure that you’re keyed into all the most common wedding day mishaps and how to prevent them, well in advance).

What Questions Should You Ask a Wedding Makeup Artist Before Booking?

After you’ve done some research and you’re finally ready to go about hiring a makeup artist, ask the following questions before you choose:

  • What’s their background and how much bridal experience do they have?
  • How would they describe their signature style?
  • What products do they use?
  • What sanitation protocols do they follow?
  • What are their contract terms?
  • What’s included in their quoted price?
  • What’s their timeline for your big day, and how will they travel to your wedding?
  • Do they have a backup plan in the event of illness or emergency?
  • How much experience do they have with different skin tones and textures?

“There are cultural specifics in terms of makeup and different facial features,” Kytka says. “I think finding somebody who you’ve seen do makeup for someone similar to you is important too.”

Asking questions like these as you more fully understand how to plan a wedding can keep you protected and better guarantee you know what to do in the event a mishap occurs, such as a wedding vendor going out of business.

Do You Need a Wedding Makeup Trial?

A wedding makeup trial is not absolutely required, but it is strongly recommended if you’re hiring a pro.

As you decide what to do on the day of your wedding, testing makeup with an artist for the first time, on the wedding day, will add stress to an already hectic occasion. Even if it might cost extra (and when considering wedding costs, every penny matters), many couples find an initial, in-advance makeup trial well worth it.

“Oh, my gosh, a trial is so fun,” Kytka says. “You show your makeup artist what you want in terms of your overall vision and you talk together and get to know each other. They’ll be in your personal space on a very important day, right?
And so building a relationship prior is very important and that’s what that opportunity is.”

Schedule the trial at least three months ahead of your wedding day, which gives you enough time to finetune your look, adjusting products as needed or even scheduling a second trial as necessary.

Do You Need a Wedding Makeup Trial

You’ll want to bring along any photos of wedding looks that you’d like the makeup artist to replicate, plus photos of your dress and accessories. Wear a top in the color of your dress, and your hair in a somewhat similar style to how you expect to wear it on the day of (for example, up vs. down). Do not wear any existing makeup to the trial, and come with a clean face.

Additionally, bring any favorite products that you’d like the artist to use.

What to Evaluate After Your Wedding Makeup Trial

After your wedding makeup trial, evaluate the look and whether or not it works for you, based on the following:

  • How well it holds up over a lengthy amount of time
  • Whether or not the products settle, smudge, or oxidize
  • How the look appears on camera

Of course, you’ll also want to think about how you feel in the look — do you feel like “you”?

“There needs to be a creative collaboration involved,” Kytka says.
”Because you want to get it right before the wedding day. I’ve seen a lot of brides not say anything at their trial, and later they’re like, ‘Actually, it was way too much makeup. And I don’t feel like myself.’ They don’t give feedback right away because they don’t want to hurt the artist’s feelings. But in reality, it does more damage to kick the can down the road by not being honest up front.”

How Do You Know if a Makeup Artist Can Work Well With Your Skin Type, Skin Tone, and Style?

When it comes to how to find a makeup artist for a wedding, ensuring they can work well with your skin type and tone is essential. As you’re vetting potential makeup artists, make a note to ask:

  • What kind of experience they have with your specific skin tone and undertone
  • How they work with sensitive skin or acne-prone skin, if necessary
  • What kind of experience they have with styles similar to your desired look
  • If they can make recommendations on moisturizer, eye cream, eyeshadow, foundation, and other products

As you talk to potential makeup artists, keep in mind whether you want a look close to your everyday style (such as natural wedding makeup), or if you want something more glam. Your preferred option will help you narrow down your makeup artist choices.

Then, when you’re choosing what to do on the day of your wedding, you’ll be able to rest assured that your makeup artist will be able to deliver exactly the look you want, whether or not you invested in a pre-wedding trial.

Should You Hire One Makeup Artist or a Full Beauty Team for the Wedding Party?

Whether or not you hire a makeup artist for just you or a full beauty team for the entire wedding party will depend on your budget, day-of itinerary, and which option you feel will be more or less stress-inducing.

Hire one makeup artist for you only if you’re working on a limited budget (because, when considering how much does a wedding cost, seemingly small expenses like these can start to add up) or if you’d prefer a more low-key, relaxed environment in which to get ready, with only a few other people, not the full wedding party.

“Most makeup artists charge a service minimum,” Kytka says. “So the services they provide can be distributed in multiple ways. It could be the bride and her mom and her grandma. It could be the bride and her bridesmaids. Depending on how old the flower girls are, there could be a little bit of something on the flower girls.”

You can also hire just one makeup artist for you and your entire wedding party if you have a small party and plenty of time before the wedding for the artist to provide services to everyone.

However, you might choose a full beauty team for wedding hair and makeup if you have more room in your budget and if you think doing so would lessen the stress for the wedding party on the big day (because stressing is definitely not what to do on the day of your wedding).

What Red Flags Should You Watch for in a Wedding Makeup Artist?

Red flags that you should watch out for when comparing and contrasting potential makeup artists for your wedding include:

  • Slow or confusing communication when initially asking questions or for a quote
  • A contract missing key details or hiding undiscussed fees
  • Inconsistency in the artist’s portfolio
  • Unclear hygiene or kit practices
  • No backup plan for if the artist is ill or unavailable
  • Seemingly “too good to be true” pricing

“If an artist is offended by the client saying, ‘Hey, I don’t love this,’ I think that’s a red flag,” Kytka says. “They’re taking it too personally. Yes, you are an artist, absolutely, but at the same time, your duty is to serve the client. That is what you’ve signed up for. If you’re not willing to take direction from the person who is going to actually be wearing the makeup, that’s a problem.”

By avoiding red-flag vendors, you can lessen the chances of a day-of disaster, such as if a wedding vendor goes out of business. Likewise, if you make sure you know the most common wedding day mishaps and how to prevent them during the planning process, you’ll be well-equipped to plan a wedding that goes off without a hitch.
