Trend Hunting: The Jewelry of the 2021 Oscars

April 28th, 2021

While award season has looked entirely different this year, the Academy Awards were back with an in-person ceremony. The red carpet may have been smaller and with a lot fewer attendees than usual but it was just as fashionable as ever. The red carpet gowns did not disappoint and neither did the jewelry that complimented them.

Opulence and extravagance were on display and they were just what we needed to see. After more than a year of ‘pandemic chic’ fashion featuring casualwear, every day jewelry and sweats, the large dose of glamour and large sparklers were very much welcome distractions. And distract, they did. If you’re like us, then you too couldn’t take your eyes away from all the big, bold and brilliant jewelry that the Oscar nominees and attendees put on. While Oscar gold was up for grabs, it was all the diamonds that took center stage. Here are just a couple of our favorite jewelry trends from this year’s Oscars.

Long Diamond Earrings

This year, a number of celebrities opted to frame their faces with long rows of sparkly diamond earrings.

Andra Day wearing long earrings, diamond bracelet, and a gold outfit at 2021 Oscars

Andra Day chose Tiffany & Co. to compliment her striking gold Vera Wang number. The sexy style was an ode to Billie Holiday, who she portrayed in her Oscar nominated role. The best actress nominee wore more than $2 million worth of Tiffany & Co. jewelry, including platinum and 18-karat yellow gold earrings that featured both white and fancy vivid yellow diamonds in its chain-like design, perfectly complimenting her outfit.

Reese Witherspoon wearing diamond pendant earrings at the 2021 Oscars

Reese Witherspoon wore a pair of art deco inspired diamond earrings by Bvlgari. The eye-catching earrings featured both diamonds and onyx, to coordinate with her red ombre Dior gown and contrasting black leather belt.

Laura Dern wearing diamond earrings and a black dress at the 2021 Oscars

Last year’s best supporting actress winner, Laura Dern, stepped on the red carpet in a fun and fabulous Oscar de la Renta gown with a feathered skirt. She chose Pomellato jewels to complete her black and white ensemble. The drop earrings she had on included white, black and brown treated pavé diamonds, which were all set in 18-karat rose gold.

Maria Bakal wearing stunning diamond earrings and diamond necklace at 2021 Oscars

Another Oscar nominated actress who shined on the red carpet was Maria Bakalova. Her ethereal white gown was perfectly enhanced with Moussaief high jewellery. The deep v-neckline of her Louis Vuitton gown was accentuated by stunning earrings that were composed of 4.24 carats fancy pink diamonds and 31.24 carats white diamonds, as well as a classic diamond necklace.

Angela Basset wearing long earrings and a red dress at the 2021 Oscars

Angela Bassett’s dramatic Alberta Ferretti gown was matched by equally dramatic Chopard earrings. The chandelier earrings included 28.19 carats of rubies, which went spectacularly with her bright red gown, and 9.54 carats of white diamonds, all set in 18-karat white gold.

Statement Necklaces

Those who kept it simple with their earrings, went all out with eye-catching statement necklaces.

Zendaya wearing three stacked necklaces at the 2021 Oscars

Zendaya, who is a Bvlgari brand ambassador, naturally chose Bvlgari jewels to wear with her show stopping neon yellow Valentino gown, inspired by a look Cher wore decades ago. The presenter may have stolen the show with 183.3 carats of diamonds, worth more than $6 million around her neck. This included a diamond necklace with a medallion featuring a cushion cut fancy vivid yellow diamond in the center, as well as a transformable double diamond collar necklace.

Vanessa Kirby wearing a diamond necklace at the 2021 Oscars

Vanessa Kirby wore a beautifully feminine pale rose pink strapless gown by Gucci and an elegant Cartier High Jewelry diamond and platinum necklace with 1,112 diamonds totaling 27.45 carats to complete the red carpet look. The actress chose to wear the necklace backwards, giving the look of a choker, and with the Y-shape and diamond at her back, making for a dramatic exit.

No doubt, the high fashion on display at the 93rd Annual Academy Awards will influence top selling styles throughout the year.
